The Smartphone is a PocketLab: “out of Lab” real experimental science

Three billions of Smartphones on earth. Each has more than a dozen of sensitive sensors, which can measure movement, light, sound, pressure, temperature, EM waves, magnetic field… even gamma rays. Free apps such as PhyPhox from Aachen Univeristy, Physics ToolBox from USA or software such as Movuina developed by us at CRI Paris empower students and teachers so that they can use any Smartphone as scientific instruments.

We shall then show from examples first how Smartphones can be used to develop experimental physics at zero added cost, second how they pave the way to experimental activities performed anywhere. Experimental physics becomes a homework. Finally, we shall show how quantitative treatments of data acquired “out of Lab”, e.g. integration or derivation, can be done numerically using Excel or like software.
