Call for applications to PhD Scholarships in the framework of the Doctorate in Applied and Engineering Physics (DAEPHYS)

The Doctorate Program on Applied and Engineering Physics (DAEPHYS) was selected in 2013 in the framework of the FCT PhD Programs Call opened by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia IP (FCT, IP). It was awarded with 24 PhD scholarships for a total of 4 editions (one edition comprises 4 years).

Hence, under the terms set in the Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação Científica approved by Law 40/2004 of 18 August, in its present wording, and the Regulamento de Bolsas da Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (RBI), the DAEPHYS Directive Board opens a call for the selection of recipients of:


for the DAEPHYS PhD Program at UA (1 scholarship), UC (1 scholarships), UL/FCUL (1 scholarship) and UNL (1 scholarships). Two scholarships are not associated to any participant university in particular and they can be attributed to candidates that apply to DAEPHYS for any of the participant universities (UA, UC, UL/FCUL, UNL).

Scholarships: According with the Article 9 of the Regulamento de Bolsas de Investigação by FCT (RBI), the scholarships have duration of one year, renewable for up to a total of 4 years, and cannot be awarded for periods of less than three consecutive months. It is foreseen that they will initiate in January 2017.

Scientific Area: Physics/Physics Engineering


In the terms of art. nº 5 and nº1 of the art. nº 14 of the RBI, the call is opened to nationals, citizens of other EU members and of third states, which hold the academic degree required to enroll in a program leading to the award of the academic degree of doctor in Physics or Engineering Physics.

Candidates that have been awarded, for the same scope and directly financed by FCT, of scholarships of the same category of the ones in the present call are not accepted.

The candidates must start their research work leading to a doctoral degree in Physics or Engineering Physics, in the framework of DAEPHYS, in the academic year 2016/2017.

Academic background:

The applicants must have a Master Degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Technological Physics, Physics Engineering or in other Engineering and Science fields with strong affinity to Physics or Physics Engineering, on last day of the Call, with a final grade of at least 14/20 (in the case of Integrated Master degrees, this grade is calculated for the last two years of the single cycle) and a grade in the Master thesis of at least 16/20. Candidates must also have good command of English.

Monthly allowance: The amount of the monthly allowance will be the one foreseen in the Annex Table of the RBI, according to the scholarship type. The disbursement of the allowance and of the expenses due to the adhesion of the selected candidate to the voluntary social insurance (1st level) will be done every month, through bank transfer to the bank account given by the candidate in the framework of the scholarship contract. The selected candidates will carry out their scholarship tasks in exclusivity, according to the "Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação".

Period of the Call

The call is open from 15 December 2017 to 15 Janeiro de 2018.

Applications: The individual applications should be submitted electronically using the application form and following the instructions available at http://daephys.fis.uc.pt. In the application form, the candidates have to rank their preferences in terms of Universities and PhD thesis projects (up to a maximum of 3 thesis projects in each university). The PhD thesis projects have to be chosen among those offered by DAEPHYS and listed on http://daephys.fis.uc.pt. Before submitting the application, the candidates have to be accepted by the supervisor of at least one of the chosen projects. Only the projects at which the candidate is accepted by the respective supervisor are taken into consideration for the application.

The application must include, being otherwise excluded, the following documents:

a) A detailed CV, dated and signed, with the indication of the electronic mail address and the agreement to be used for notification; b) Copy of the identification document;

c) Documents that demonstrate that the candidate meets the requirements for the award of the grant, namely a copy of certificates of all academic degrees obtained, with the final grade;

d) For the academic degrees awarded by a foreign higher education institution is mandatory the presentation of the registration of the academic degree recognition and the final grade conversion to the Portuguese scale (a process regulated by Decree-Law No. 341/2007 of 12 October) or, alternatively, obtaining equivalence/recognition of the academic degrees (a process regulated by Decree-Law No. 283/83 of 21 June)1;

e) Statement of the candidate present professional status, indicating the nature of the labour connection, functions and average weekly teaching time, if applicable, which can be replaced by a statement under oath, if he/she do not pursue any professional activity or provide any service.

f) One or two recommendation letters.

Evaluation Process and Criteria: The evaluation of applications shall be done by the Selection Committee, according to the process set out in the meeting of DAEPHYS Directive Board on 21 April 2016. The candidate selection will be done in two stages: Stage I – All the applications that fulfil the call requirements will be evaluated and the candidates will be ranked by the application of the following evaluation criteria weights: 1st cycle grade (or first 3 years of an Integrated Master degree) – 20%; 2nd cycle grade (or 2 final years of an Integrated Master degree) – 30%; Master Thesis grade – 15%; Academic/scientific experience – 15% for thesis projects involving a research laboratory or 10% for thesis projects that will be carried out in collaboration of a technological company; Professional experience – 15%; A thesis project involving more than one university from the DAEPHYS program – 5% or thesis project that will be carried out in collaboration with a technological company – 10%. The candidates can obtain an additional bonus from the recommendation letters and their statements of motivation. The 12 best candidates from this ranking will be admitted to the next stage of the selection process. Stage II - The candidates admitted to this stage will be interviewed by the Selection Committee in order to better evaluate the adequacy of their earlier education, the technical and scientific competences and their motivation. From the interview (weight of 75%) and the recommendation letters (weight of 25%), a multiplicative factor, with a value between 0.75 and 1.5, will be applied to the grade obtained in the previous evaluation stage.

Attribution of the scholarships:

The candidates are ranked by applying the evaluation process and criteria. The scholarships are awarded from the top of the ranking list downward but conditioned to the availability of scholarship in the institutions to which the candidate applies through the choice of thesis project(s).

Selection Committee:

The committee consists of the following members: Prof. João Carlos Lopes de Carvalho (Chairman), 1st Member (Prof. Maria Adelaide de Almeida Pedro de Jesus), to replace the President in his absence or impediment, 2nd Member (Prof. João de Lemos Pinto), 3rd Member (Prof. Maria Margarida da Fonseca Beja Godinho). Are alternate members: 1st Member (Prof. José António Carvalho Paixão) and 2nd Member (Prof. Florinda Mendes da Costa).

Announcement of results:

The Call candidates admission and exclusion list, the results obtained in each evaluation stage and the final ranking list of the ones that complete the procedure are made public on the website of DAEPHYS in http://daephys.fis.uc.pt.

The candidates admitted to the first selection stage that proceed to the next stage will be notified by an email sent to the email address provided on their Curriculum Vitae.

The excluded candidates are notified by an email sent to the email address provided in the Curriculum Vitae, for the hearing of interested parties under the Código do Procedimento Administrativo. The final decision can be appealed to the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, within 15 working days of its notification.

The final ranking list is announced to all the candidates.

The candidates have access to the jury minutes, which contains the evaluation parameters and their weighting of each of the selection stages, the classifying grid and the final rating, provided they are requested.

Complementary information: The Program Directive Board reserves the right to not filling all vacancies open in the present call.

Funding: The scholarships awarded under this Call will be sponsored by Portuguese funds of the “Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior (FCT/MCTES)” Portuguese Government Budget, and, if eligible, by funds from “Fundo Social Europeu” through the "Programas Operacionais do período de programação 2014-2020", the “Portugal 2020”, namely the "Programa Operacional Temático do Capital Humano”, the “Programa Operacional Regional do Norte, do Centro ou do Alentejo", according to the provisions of the specific regulation applicable.

The fellowship granting is dependent on the reception of the required documentation and the budget of the funding body.
