Non-Contact cardiorespiratory monitoring techniques – Video and Radar based approaches

Cardiorespiratory monitoring typically requires direct contact with a subject's skin, which can be uncomfortable if used for long periods of time. In the last years new approaches have been developed to leverage the usage of off-the-shelf components like video cameras or radars to enable continuous monitoring. This presentation is an overview on how to use these techniques, with emphasis on radar by providing a use case where two off-the-shelf radars were used to extract respiratory rate. About the author: Daniel Osório is a PhD student in the Nova I4H – Instrumentation for Health program and has a master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra. His research focus is signals processing, mainly on electromyography, electrocardiography and posturography, but also keen in tackling new and exciting fields such as video or radar signal processing.
