Seminário do Seminário no âmbito do programa de doutoramento em Engenharia Física do aluno  Jorge André Almeida Barreto

Titulo do Seminário: "Supersonic flow and rockets"

Resumo:

In the early 20th was a public misconception that there was a sound barrier that would make impossible to reach the speed of sound, later it was found it was only a technological and scientific barrier.

Nowadays the sound barrier is well understood, and we have modern high-speed aircraft and space launch vehicles which are supersonic objects built to withstand several aerodynamic effects like shock waves, fluid compression, heat friction etc. These effects are explained in a branch of the fluid mechanics which is compressible flow (or gas dynamics).

In this seminar, we will briefly look into the definitions of speed of sound and supersonic flow regimes, isentropic flow conditions where is necessary to explain the flow along a nozzle with area change and what is required to achieve rocket propulsion.
