Scapulothoracic dysfunction is an important contributor to shoulder instability and chronic shoulder pain, particularly in sedentary occupations characterized by prolonged sitting, occupational demands, and poor postural habits. This doctoral research investigated whether real-time three-dimensional kinematic biofeedback, combined with ergonomic interventions, could improve scapulothoracic motor control and support more effective prevention and rehabilitation strategies. Three experimental studies involving healthy participants demonstrated that augmented kinematic biofeedback improved the precision, efficiency, and motor learning of scapular-focused exercises compared with clinician-provided feedback or no feedback, with the acquired motor skills also transferring to functional movements through significant improvements in movement accuracy and execution time. A systematic review and meta-analysis of 34 studies further identified forward head posture, thoracic hyperkyphosis, scapular dyskinesis, low physical fitness, prolonged sitting, and high job strain as major contributors to chronic shoulder pain in office workers, while showing that multimodal interventions combining ergonomic adjustments, postural education, scapulothoracic exercises, behavioural strategies, and biofeedback were more effective than unimodal approaches.
