Twelve years ago, Cláudia Quaresma, a professor and researcher in the Physics Department at NOVA FCT, received an unexpected request from Dona Estefânia Hospital to create a three-dimensional model for a complex clinical case. She replied: “Look, I’ve never done anything like this before… I’ll try. And so we did, and it went well,” she recalls.
That “first yes” was the starting point for what is now the NOVA FCT 3D Printing Center for Health, the only national center dedicated exclusively to the three-dimensional printing of medical devices.
Since 2022, under Cláudia Quaresma’s leadership, the team has developed more than 200 different prototypes, distributed to hospitals and rehabilitation centers throughout the country. The portfolio includes prostheses for children with congenital amputations, specialized bracelets for stroke survivors, and customized anatomical models for surgical planning.
As a non-profit organization, the 3D Printing Centre for Health relies on the collaboration of more than 50 volunteers, including researchers and students of biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering.
